Hutsell Addition – Lakewood

The goal of this project was to add office space, a bathroom, a garage, and exterior living spaces to a 1920s Hutsell home in the Lakewood area in Dallas, Texas. The Owner requested that all elements match the exact Hutsell designs used throughout the home. It was challenging to find materials from the time period to match the exterior brick and the colorized clay roof. The exterior addition was finished with a similar brick and a Ludowici colorized clay tile roof.

Details

The tile in the bathroom, including the shower, was custom made and antiqued to match the 1920s-style colors. The owner secured original plumbing fixtures, antiqued light fixtures, and mirror from the 1920s.
The office space has the typical Hutsell detailing of a recessed window seat with an arched opening flanked by arched bookcases and wooden shelves. A prep area was added to the office space. It has traditional-style tile and faux-finished cabinets with doors inlaid with antiqued glass. The antiqued glass in the cabinets is nicely complemented by antiqued potter light fixture. The office space has hand-troweled walls and ceiling with a special finish.
The exterior staircase and banister matches the ironwork used in the rest of the home. The tile risers were hand painted to match the style of a neighboring Hutsell home. The tile around the downstairs door matches the tile used in the staircase.
The decorative clay tile detail above the bay window is stucco to match the original design of the home. The wooden columns at the top of the exterior staircase were trimmed and colorized to match the original design. The window and door designs match the original design of the home. The owner hired a local artist to tile the niche underneath the staircase.
The cabana was added for outdoor entertaining. It has a stained cedar open-truss ceiling with a Ludowici tile roof. Under the cabana is a stone fireplace and chimney. The chimney has a tiled roof section that matches the chimneys on the home. Opposite from the fireplace is an outdoor kitchen area.
